Description
Volcanic slag (scoria) forms when magma containing a large amount of dissolved gases flows from a volcano or is ejected into the air during an eruption. As the molten rock emerges from the earth, the pressure upon it decreases, and the dissolved gases begin to escape in the form of bubbles. These bubbles practically give scoria, or other volcanic rocks, their specific porosity.
Volcanic slag (scoria) has a relatively lower porosity compared to pumice or other rocks, but higher than basalt and andesite. It is a denser alternative that helps with root system development, ensures optimal drainage for plants, and aids soil aeration. It contains essential elements for plant growth and supporting microbiology at the root level, such as silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sulfur oxides. Scoria can be used as a substrate for plants, mixed with other types of soil, as well as a substrate for terrariums or aquariums.
